Partnership between casa dos ventos and valgroup guarantees renewable energy for the packaging production and recycling

08/03/2022

Valgroup has the largest automated PET bottle recycling line in Brazil. Valgroup’s purpose is to have the totality of its energy consumption come from renewable sources.

Valgroup, one of the largest plastic transformers and recyclers in the world, has signed an energy purchase and sale with Casa dos Ventos, leader in the development of wind projects in Brazil and holder of the largest portfolio of renewable products in the country. The agreement, which lasts for 15 years, guarantees the volume of 25 average MW for the industry, equivalent to approximately half of Valgroup’s energy consumption in Brazil.

The contract is in accordance with the company’s sustainability actions: Valgroup was the first in Latin America to invest in a system for total recovery of solvents used in its production processes, ceasing to emit pollutant gases into the atmosphere. It also has the largest automated PET bottle recycling line in the country, located in Rio

Rio de Janeiro, with the capacity to process 100 million units per month. Together with two other plants in Spain and Mexico, a total of over 300 million containers are recycled monthly.

The partnership with Casa dos Ventos will provide renewable energy, as of July 2023, for half of the company’s productive plants in Brazil. The goal of the packaging company is to gradually increase this percentage. The agreement consolidates Valgroup’s commitment to structured ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) actions.

“Sustainability has always been part of Valgroup’s history and, with this partnership, we are taking another significant step toward reducing our carbon footprint. With greater availability of wind power, we will be able to support the development of our innovative and sustainable solutions with clean and renewable energy”, highlights Eduardo Berkovitz, Director of Institutional Relations and Compliance of Valgroup.

The energy will be generated at the Babilônia Sul Wind Complex, under construction by Casa dos Ventos in Bahia, with 360 MW of capacity. “We provide predictability as well as cost reduction by providing clean energy. These are customized solutions for consumers who want to efficiently decarbonize their processes and align their practices to the ESG agenda”, says Lucas Araripe, Director of New Business at Casa dos Ventos. The agreement also enables Valgroup to become a self producer of energy, through the acquisition of a stake in the enterprise.
