Valgroup develops recyclable packaging with integrity and high moisture barrier for Nestlé's compostable capsules in Brazil.

28/12/2022

Nestlé has recently announced Nescafé Dolce Gusto NEO. Brazil is the first country to receive this innovation and will produce 100% of the compostable capsules in the sustainable Nescafé Dolce Gusto factory.

For the capsules to reach the consumer safely, Valgroup – one of the world’s largest producers, converters and recyclers of plastic packaging – has developed a mono-material ready-to-recycle packaging with a rigorous hermetic seal, which ensures a high barrier and safety for the product offered by Nestlé.

The project development took about three years and relied on the expertise of Valgroup, a global pioneer in the creation of packaging that is 100% recyclable and safe, in addition to the differentiated design that allows the package to be opened several times without breaking the barrier necessary to guarantee the shelf life of the product.

With a focus on sustainability, both companies work on the development of innovative solutions and products to bring to the consumer perfection in preparation and high-quality drinks that are unprecedented differentials in the segment, in a safe and recyclable packaging.

For Valgroup, participating in this project reinforces its commitment to sustainability. The company has a strong ESG positioning, such as being NET ZERO by 2040, neutralizing carbon emissions and recycling the equivalent to 100% of the amount of packaging produced, effectively contributing to the circular economy by removing plastic waste from the environment.

According to Valgroup’s Innovation and Technology Manager, Márcio Kimura, the development of a robust packaging and with differentiated materials provides the consumer with more safety when consuming the product.

“With this innovation we can transport many more capsules to our consumer using less material. A technical package with differentiated materials to provide an optimal seal, consequently extraordinary hermeticity and resins that provide high thermal resistance so we can simplify the structure without losing productivity.” – says Márcio Kimura, Innovation and Technology Manager at Valgroup.

Not by coincidence, Brazil will be the first consumer market of the global launching. “A technology of this size honors the quality of Brazilian coffee, elevating the delivery of the product to another level of flavor and experience.” – explains Rachel Muller, Vice President of Coffee and Beverages at Nestlé Brazil.

The capsules are produced in the Triplo Zero Plant of Nescafé Dolce Gusto, in Montes Claros (MG). This is the first Nestlé unit in the world to receive certification of Neutral Environmental Impact in all industrial stages, the factory uses only reused water, does not generate waste for landfills, and neutralizes 100% of its emissions (hence the title Triplo Zero). For the manufacture of NEO capsules, the unit has gained a new production line, automated from Industry 4.0 concepts, with a highly trained workforce.

The entire range of capsules has been on sale since the beginning of December of this year. In addition, in e-commerce, it is possible to find a package with a capacity for 30 capsules and personalization with the desired name, with the same technology and security provided by Valgroup.
